About acupuncture

Acupuncture originated in China over 2000 years ago, and is an integrated part of medical care in many parts of the world. It is a traditional healthcare system, and deals with both acute and chronic problems. It views pain and illness as signs that the body is out of balance. By inserting ultra-fine sterile needles into specific acupuncture points, it seeks to re-establish the free flow of energy (known as “Qi”), to restore balance and trigger the body’s natural healing response.

Acupuncture can provide significant health benefits, either by addressing specific conditions, or by improving general health and wellbeing. An acupuncturist looks for “patterns” in the individual, identifying root causes for ill-health, and working to restore the natural balance.

A growing body of evidence-based clinical research shows that acupuncture can be safely considered for a wide range of common health problems. Studies have shown that (amongst other things) blood flow is increased, hormones are influenced, and areas of the brain are directly affected to improve various conditions.

About traditional chinese medicine (TCM)

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is both a spiritual and medical system that began in China around 3500 years ago. It incorporates theories such as the 5 Elements, Yin and Yang, and Qi (pronounced ‘chee’), and relates them to human health.

The theory of Yin and Yang is fundamental to the practice of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and is the foundation of diagnosis and treatment. Yin and Yang together form a whole, which in balance constitutes a state of harmony and health, and when out of balance indicates illness.  At the most basic and deep level, TCM treatment seeks to balance Yin and Yang in each person.

TCM meridians are channels or pathways through which Qi, or energy flows. The meridians function as a network that can be mapped out throughout the entire body. The use of acupuncture on certain points within the meridians can improve the flow of blocked or stagnant Qi, unblocking areas of discomfort or imbalance. This restores movement of Qi and improves health and wellbeing.
